A Journal of Sorts

ok, so there appears to be much benefit in using a pre-formatted template for a journal and even more benefit from using some sort of software that plugs information into the pre-formatted template and I should explore finding one that can fit on this laptop (like under a MB?) and also explore finding the best one available for when I get the new computer... any ideas?

well, I just spent three or four hours searching tucows and cnet and I downloaded some stuff and maybe later I'll see about installing, but that means taking more time away from writing and the focus... and learning how to use a new program...

. o O ( time away from here installing Crimson Editor ) O o .

a lot to learn and missing some key features, the one especially missed is the sorting by details in the file tree, but I may be able to adapt there... the essential potential is that it has a rudimentary spellchecker, though it appears it is limited to highlighting words and that still means mostly editing manually, so time may not be substantial enough to warrant regular usage... we shall see... I shall have to explore this program further... it is free and may have more value than it appears at first glance... come to think of it, I'd probably have to spend much time re-learning any word processing program to make it effectively time saving...

I think mostly it's just a matter of getting used to a new format and system... I shall explore...

ok, this program has one feature I have been looking for... searching for text within multiple files... so after searching for a few minutes, it found more than 1600 files with an inoperative email address in them (you'll note that announcement if you came in through the main gate)... now I am trying to figure out how to change them in all the files at once... do I have to open every file?... that'll be an instant crash, to be sure...

and so it was... actually, I didn't open every file... I think I opened a few dozen... the program ran out of memory... ok, so I tried to replace the address in all open files... illegal operation, crash... at least it did not take Explorer or the computer with it... so we open it again, do the five minute search for the address again, and open fewer files this time... so while the search process goes on again, I wonder if I can open the email program and download email... ah, testing the limits of this old baby...

of course the proprietary screen grabbing of MS products does not help... I think, when I finally do get my new laptop, I am going to use Netscape for a browser and maybe for email, though I might splurge on Eudora... maybe I'll check out the free Eudora first and see how it's come along over the years... I used it about five or six years ago and liked it, but liked the Outlook Express features better and since space was the primary criteria for choosing what programs went (and go) on this laptop, Eudora had to go only because MS bundled OE with Windows and MS takes up most of the space...
